Mal Bien Mezcal Espadin 750ml
$72.99 price per bottle

Our first release comes from a corner of Oaxaca where the road signs are in Spanish, but most of the locals still speak Zapoteco - especially when there’s a pair of suspicious looking dudes from California hanging around. On the edge of Santiago Matatlan, the modern center of mezcal production, fifth generation mezcalero Don Juan Hernandez Mendez and his family distill a range of beautiful mezcales in a very not-modern way. The Hernandez family grows nearly all of their own espadin on a hillside plot of land, which has been patiently acquired and passed down over the nearly 200 years the family has been making mezcal. The finished product is a beautiful, easy drinking mezcal that is true to the place and people who created it. Complex enough to be enjoyed on its own, at 91. 4 proof it’s also assertive enough to shine through in cocktails where lower ABV mezcales can easily get lost. This is our everyday sipper, and the ”gateway mezcal” we offer friends who are just becoming familiar with the flavors and history of the category. Producer Since 2016, the Mal Bien team has been traveling Mexico, driving off the map and into mountains filled with treacherous roads, police officers of questionable moral character, feral dogs, indigenous languages, narcos, ancient relics, machete wielding protestors, insect based meals, mudslides, blockades, corrupt politicians, and many of the world’s kindest, funniest, most brilliant people. In addition to some hard to believe stories, the result has been a bounty of relationships with the country’s best distillers, whose work we are excited to share with you.
