Coffey Malt is made from 100% malted barley. However it is not categorized as “malt whisky” but as “grain whisky” since it is not distilled in a pot still. Rather, it has been distilled in a Coffey continuous still, resulting in a softer, fruitier whisky with a creamy texture. A little drier and spicier than the corn based Coffey Grain. Nose: Big and bold spice and mocha, black cherry, Bourbon like sweet vanilla and an almost pot still like character spice. Toasted and aromatic oak, bananas in butterscotch, chocolate, nuts and toffee Palate: Spiced chocolate and kirsch on a rich, sweet and oily body, more Bourbon like rich vanilla and even Rum like demorera sugar with aromatic spices and firm oak. Finish: Black cherry, chocolate, creme brulee tops, hot toffee/butterscotch sauce, toasted vanilla, cinnamon and all spice, lingers long! Somewhere style wise between Irish pot still (Redbreast) and Aged Bourbon, a thick and luxurious Malt with a difference.
